Hello Rose, The option to either show or hide the SideBar is only available when not in the phone view. Or, more simply stated, make certain you do not have your phone connected to iTunes when you attempt to hide or show the SideBar.
I know this sounds ridiculously confusing but, nevertheless, it's true.
