Yeah they say that duo will soon support audio only. You can get audio only by locking your screen while on a call. It's definitely a work in progress, but I like the idea.

Facetime only works with Apple devices, however Google has an app that
functions similar to facetime called duo which works on both devices and
makes it possible to video call with Android users. The only difference
is that duo requires that you have phone service because it works based
on your phone number. However you can use wifi or mobile data with duo.
