You can also drive 20 years without wearing a seat belt and never get fined or 
have an accident, but then when you do have one and go through the window head 
first you wish you had worn the seat belt.
The same goes for making sure you have a backup and for closing out your apps 
and doing at least a reboot of your iPhone if you don't want to do a Reset 
Network Settings.
But to each their own, it is what I do and I know for a fact that people on 
this list and others I know have had issues from an upgrade and after they did 
a Reset Network setting the problems disappeared. I guess the difference 
between my car example and the iPhone is that often doing this after the fact 
still helps whereas of course you can't put on the seat belt after you go 
through the window *smile*.

I didn't do network settings, didn't close down the APPS, took 5 minutes to 
download the 1.6 GB, and 15 or so to install on both the iPad air, and iPhone 
5S.
