I have always tap to the status bar to make sure I'm back at the top. Actually, I kind of like it that I'm not forced up there. For instance, if I'm reading down in my timeline, and it refreshes which sometimes happens, I don't want to be taken back up to the top. I want to keep reading until I'm done, then go back to the top. I don't find having to double tap to go up there any sort of a big deal, and I'm pretty sure it didn't start with iOS 10.
