For the facebook app, you need to pass through a scroll up gesture.
The 3-finger swipe up will not work.

What you need to do is put a finger near the bottom of the screen and then  
double-tap and hold it there, wait for the tri-tone signal, and then swipe up.  
This is all done with one finger.

Once you do this, new messages will appear at the bottom of the
screen.

This is a bit tedious, but does work.
