Hi Esther,

Thank you for the suggestions and comparison info. I did clear out the
history cache, and app switcher. The speed is much better. My husband
forgets about the occasional housekeeping that needs to be done on
electronics. Given that is my only complaint, I'm pretty darn lucky. (LOL)

After reading your comments, I think it is going to be a new IPad. With my
hearing loss, I much prefer the speaker on the IPad to the IPhone. We are
hoping that the National Library Service does release an app to allow
reading of NLS books.

Thank you very much for taking the time to answer my questions. You really
are an asset to the list.

Best,

Lynda

Subject: Re: IPod Touch Speed

Hi Lynda,

The speed of the first generation iPad is much slower than the iPad 2, and
current model iPad. It is slower than and iPhone 4 or 4S. You can help out
on the performance speed by not keeping extra Safari pages loaded, and
clearing out the cache and history under Settings > Safari, since it's not
simply the older processor's speed, but the smaller amount of onboard
dynamic memory for loading large images and redrawing the screen (i.e., this
is not the storage memory that you have available for apps and music, but a
property of the processor chip). It also helps to keep the App Switcher
relatively clear, either by manually deleting other apps or using an app
that can free memory. I'd guess that the new iPod Touch would be
considerably faster Than his current iPad -- maybe even faster than your
iPhone 4S. The current iPad is also fast. I suspect it's a question of what
you want, and also whether your husband is a low vision user or totally
blind. There can be advantages in sharing peripherals that use the same
dock connector. And it depends on whether he'll use the extra screen real
estate. The iPad 2 and 3 have camera connector kits that allow you to plug
in and use unpowered USB devices (for example, some USB microphones). The
iPad (3) will also mirror apps by default, if you need to give a demo or
presentation. Those are some features that I don't believe are present (or
not at the same level) for the iPhone 4S, and that some people might use.
You'll also have better audio quality without headphones with the iPad, if
that makes a difference.

The new iPod Touch has the convenience of the smaller screen/ portability,
and a good camera for OCR and barcode and ID apps (LookTel Money Reader,
LookTel Recognizer, Digit-Eyes, etc.) It will also support the faster
wireless network connections, but will use new dock adapters. In other
respects, it seems much like what many people hoped for in the fourth
generation iPod Touch (though it would be nice to have built-in GPS --
didn't expect that to happen, though.)

HTH. Cheers,

Esther
