Hi Dani, No, you can send a text message to any cell phone, just make sure you turn on "Send as SMS if iMessage is unavailable", this way if you ever try to send a message to somebody else who has an iPhone and for some reason you or they don't have data coverage the message is still sent as a regular SMS message. If you don't want to use SMS or want to get around the limitations you could of course use a cross-platform app like Skype, Whats App or Facebook Messenger to text each other and all three of these also allow for voice chat (Whats App just added the option for video chat in an update yesterday).
