As I read this exchange it occurs to me that perhaps Todd may not be a native English speaker, so perhaps there may be a language barrier thus causing something to be lost in translation. I don't see this as a way to excuse nasty behavior, but, sometimes when words are not translated correctly it could lead to misunderstandings.
