I believe only with Facebook Messenger and not the regular Facebook app can someone place a voice call to a Facebook friend. This is particularly useful with a good WIFI connection and a non-existent or poor cell connection. Also, these days many people check Facebook more often than e-mail so using Facebook Messenger to send a written message to a Facebook friend is often more effective than sending an e-mail. Written messages are not limited to 140 characters as with a text message.
