In recent iPhone models, Apple has significantly improved the battery life. It does not drain much on standby. Further, the typical need for navigation apps is in walking around a small town or traveling to or from a bus stop or train station. When someone reaches the destination, usually within half an hour, the app is closed and removed from the app switcher. This limited use does not drain the battery much with Blind Square or Nearby Explorer.
I have not used an external GPS receiver. I find that the iPhone is accurate enough outdoors. For navigation purposes, , an accuracy rate of five or six meters with the iPhone compared to two meters with the GPS receiver does not make much of a difference in the real world. I am usually within three or four steps of the door I want to enter in downtown Chicago with all its tall buildings up against the sidewalk using the navigation apps.
