I just tried adding a new contact as well as adding one based from a phone number in my recent call list and had no issues whatsoever, either. I was able to type into the first name, last name and company fields, flick back and forth, double tap to go to th start or th end and go back to review or change. I suggest your husband should close all apps and do a Reset Network Settings, then try again.
