Hi Karl, I am going to advice you to use imap with your gmail account on your iPhone is the best option to use.

The last time I tried this on my older phone the signup process was easy but after I got it going Gmail dumped down over 20 thousand messages from years past. On my PC I use outlook for my Gmail and had it set not to save a copy of the message on the server. I guess this didn’t work which resulted in the huge pile of messages. Unless I’m mistaken there is no good way to delete large groups of messages from the phone easily.
