Janet, The issue with the older Light Detector app mostly is will it work in iOS 11. That part I'm not sure of. If it hasn't been updated in several years, then probably not. I do really like the vibrations in the Boop app for getting feedback, in addition to the spoken feedback and sounds. This means the app could be used by someone who is deaf-blind or hard of hearing.
