I actually personally know of many of the sightling variety that
constantly use siri. Heck, even Rush Limbaugh uses Siri too.
Just imagine you have to drive from point A to point B. I’m talking a
major road trip; 500 miles +. Those Sightlings can just hit the home
button and say; Siri, where can I find a place for breakfast;
providing you have Location Services turned on, and bingo; you know
where to head to. Siri will even ask you if you want driving
directions to her suggestions for breakfast joints. Or she’ll ask you
if you want to call them.
If I hadn’t gone blind, I’d call that hands free assistance. Plus way
big time cool too!
Siri benefits everyone, and that’s a nice comforting fact.

I have been thinking about what you have been saying about Siri. I
know I agree with you that I wish Apple would make it do more. But I
am wondering in the scheme of things I wonder how many sighted people
use Siri like the visually impaired do. I know my wife does not use
Siri and I cannot think of one sighted person I know ever use it. So I
am thinking Apple does not improve Siri just for the blind and they
don’t get much input from the sighted users, so that is why I am
thinking they don’t improve it. Just my thought on this.

I know that they are reporting this just as they are reporting how
Apple has and is hiring experts in autonomous/self-driving car
technology. As far as SIRI goes, however, I want them to show that
they are making some progress, it just seem sso ignorant that they are
just not really improving SIRI but they of course know that is what
everybody wants.

I’m surprised to see so much attention devoted towards the more
expressive Siri voices. I view it as a nice touch to the
presnetaiton layer, but the structure and interaction,
specifically with understanding, context, and meaningful
intelligence has a lot to be desired. The only advantage Siri has
is that it was first, but all other voice-based assistants are
smarter, helpful, and useful. However, to be fair, even the best
of the “Assistants” today would not last as a human Assistant in a
job. We’ve been promised a bright future with the voice user
interfaces, but a lot more resources and time needs to be realized
before the “Year Million” is our reality.
