I discovered that if I know a can is right side up, by turning my iPhone upside down so that the camera is on the bottom and holding the phone about 6 to 8 inches away, I set the can and the camera on the same table and when I turn the can it picks up on the barcode right away. Of course, you have to make sure that the camera is definitely pointed at the can. A little weight off one side of the other does make a difference.
