Try the app "File Explorer" ... it is available as a free and a paid version, and it is supposed to allow you to use it to get files into apps such as Voice Dream Reader from any source (your network or plugged into your phone like iStick).
I have played with it to get files off of my network drive attached to my router, and from my NAS, and it seemed to work just fine. It will either move files for you or let you open apps which use them, or even has its own suite of apps for music playing, showing photos and videos, etc., so that you can just click on a file and have something immediately handle it.
