The idea of having to pay a company that has more money than they know what
to do with to be able to give them feedback as a beta tester just rubs me
the wrong way.

But, you are right.  They need a larger pool of blind testers, obviously.

Well, anybody can pay Apple's $99 annual cost to join the developer program
and become a beta tester. It is really up to us to become beta testers if we
want to catch, report, and influence Apple during the final testing /
development phase of each iOS development cycle. Considering how small our
population is, if we become beta testers at the same percentages as sighted
people, only 0.5% of the beta testers are testing for VoiceOver
accessibility. The odds are that the percentage of blind beta testers is
even less than 0.5%.
