Richard, At one time, I was paid to be a beta tester. It then rubbed me the wrong way to become a beta tester for free, but at least I received a free product or software for my time and expertise. Most recently, beta testing has not even included free product. This is just continuation of the trend.
That said, for product developers, $99 annually for the package to develop for such a product with such widespread adoption, and a 33% charge on the distribution (only payable if you charge for your product), is actually quite inexpensive. I have a friend who owns an oracle application development company whose applications are for small to medium-sized businesses. The annual cost she must pay to Oracle is now around $100'000 because her business has become so successful. Every year her required licensing fees go up as they are based on her success.
