I do have visual voice mail on my iPhone 6s plus, but I am not having anny issues as well. Perhaps this is an issue limitted to newer phones?

When I double tap on the voice mail tab it used to directly dial in/connect, now there is a button on the screen that says "Call Voice Mail". After I double tap it, I am connected to my voice mail system and from here on it's just like a phone call. If I move the phone away from my ear it switches to speaker, if I have a voice mail I dial 1 to listen to it, I think it's 7 to delete it afterwards etc. When I'm done I just do a two-finger double tap to hang up the call, I am now back still on the voice mail tab with the "Call Voice Mail" button on the screen and I can then go back to my Favourites, Recents, Contacts or Keypad tab. If you see transcription of voice mail and something that looks like an Inbox with your messages/voice mails listed then you have visual voice mail and since I usually pick up my phone and maybe get a voice mail once a month I don't bother paying the $2/month extra which my current provider charges for visual voice mail.
