Concatenative text to speech engines, such as those from Nuance, use
spliced up recordings of actual human readers. Formant text to speech
engines, like Eloquence, do not start with recordings of actual human
readers but instead use an acoustic model. there's a good read of all of
this, including the strengths and weaknesses of the various different
types of speech synthesis at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speech_synthesis

Eloquence isn't really a synthesized human voice, in the way that
others (such as the aforebemoaned Alex are said to be). I thought I
was liking Vocaliser Expressive voices (as they work with JAWS) but
became disenchanted with eac one I tried after a few week or few
months' use. (Wrong intonations, off pronunciations, etc.) I like
James enough, though. (He also has a bit too much misplaced intonation
at times!) But if I want a relaxing read of something long, then James
will do. With JAWS, I went back to Eloquence, which I'm using. Its
faults (and it has some bad ones, such as saying 'apostrophe' are
predictable.
My iPhone voice is female and Irish (Moira). JAWS does something to
her voice on the PC so that it doesn't sound as 'pleasant' as on the
iPhone. (Many fellow irish dislike her, preferring instead the UK
Daniel voice. - Me, no.

I also think that the Eloquence voices are the best, but someone said
something about "humanised"
voices sounding very * weird.
I have to take exception with that statement as I find the aforesaid
eloquence voices to be very
humanised and they do not sound, in the least, weird to me.

I agree; Eloquence is still my favorite and I haven't found anything to
replace it. I actually find the "human" sounding voices to sound really
weird.

Synthesizer voices are highly subjective and very much a matter of

eloquence and wouldn't use another voice if I had a choice and would

that is just my personal preference.

The subject pretty much says it all. I've tried using his voice
a number of times, and it
sounds weirdly robotic and muffled to me. Not appealing at all. What
is the appeal for people,
since it was such a big deal when it was added?
