Yes, it works as advertised, but you do have to give it a good swipe up and for
me at least a double tap and hold doesn't seem to do it, instead I have to find
the actual button att he bottom right and then used 3D Touch which means press
down on it and swipe up.
You will also get some Voiceover chatter which can be heard in the recording
unless of course you use a headset.
After you do the gesture correctly there is a dialogue on the screen towards
the bottom, you have a timer which if you swipe to it will read the elapsed
time and if you swipe away and back after a few seconds you see that it is
counting up or in other words that the recording is ongoing. Then there is a
"Send" button which you would double tap when you are done recording and want
to send the message, it will be like lifting your finger and as soon as you
double tap it the message will be sent.
I tried a 2-finger double tap to see if that would end the recording and send
it, but Whats App has not implemented this gesture and instead when I tried it
my Audible book that I was listening to started playing and what I had recorded
was simply cancelled.
There is definitely room for improvement for Voiceover users, maybe they could
implement the 2-finger double tap when you are in a conversation to start and
stop recording or they could maybe come up with an Action Rotor gesture if the
Voice Message button has focus like "Start Recording" and then once recording
has started they should either do this so that the "Send button has focus and a
double tap will work reliably to send the message without the need to swipe
around or explore the screen to find it or that a 2-finger double tap would do
this.

Sieghard

Subject: new gesture in WhatsApp messenger

Hi all. Has anyone mastered the new gesture where you are supposed to be able
to slide your finger up a little and it locks the message so you can record
longer messages. I can’t seem to master it. If someone could describe it that
would be cool. Thanks.
