Hello Keith, That is surprising since I just listened to the latest Today in iOS Podcast and Rob confirmed that while there was only one iPhone 4S which worked both on CDMA and GSM carriers, there are now once again 3 iPhone 5 models, a CDMA version for Verizon and Sprint and a carrier in Japan and 2 different GSM models, one for AT&T, Rogers, Telus and Bell in North America and another one for European, Australian and New Zealand and some Asian carriers. Apparently the difference here is in the LTE and he said there will most likely be another one or 2 iPhone 5 models for China.
I don't really understand the whole locking to a carrier thing anyways. After all, if I for example buy a subsidized iPhone from Telus here in Canada where I have to sign up for a 3-year contract to get the full subsidy, why don't they just give me an unlocked phone and sign me up for a 3-year contract. Then if after a year I decide to go to ?Rogers they would just say that I haven't fulfilled my contract and impose a stiff penalty which means I most likely wouldn't do it and even if I did Telus would be paid what I owe them for the phone. After all, I can break the contract now and pay whatever penalty they impose and once I have done this and am off the contract I can ask them for an official unlock. Verizon is shipping it already unlocked and you can use it on AT&T's and T-Mobile networks. Here's the caveat though. When you use it on the US carriers GSM networks you will only get HTSPA speeds. No LTE. So buyer be ware. Several sources are reporting such as the New York Times, CNET, etc. I also confirmed this from verizon customer service. Whether this was by designed or not, I don't know. But this is a welcomed surprise. I'm happy to know that I can use my phone on other networks if need be. >> >> -- >> You received this message because you are subscribed to the "VIPhone" Google Group. >> To search the VIPhone public archive, visit http://www.mail-archive.com/viphone@googlegroups.com/. >> To post to this group, send email to viphone@googlegroups.com. >> To unsubscribe from this group, send email to viphone+unsubscr...@googlegroups.com. >> For more options, visit this group at http://groups.google.com/group/viphone?hl=en. > > > -- > You received this message because you are subscribed to the "VIPhone" Google Group. > > -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the "VIPhone" Google Group.
