Breaking: APH Announces Orders For the Orbit Reader 20 Will Start February 2

APH has announced via it's mailing list for the Orbit Reader 20 that theywill start taking orders tomorrow for the much anticipated brailledisplay/notetaker.

In the message, Ken Perry of APH stated: "Once we have received orders forour available stock, no further orders will be accepted at that time. Weexpect to sell out quickly. Rest assured we will have additional quantitiesavailable in the near future, and will keep you posted!" Because of thelimited availability of units, APH is restricting purchases to two OrbitReaders per account or individual.

The cost for an Orbit Reader 20 is $449 and you will be able to order inseveral ways:

•through the APH Shop online for non-quota orders only
•calling customer relations at 800-223-1839
•emailing a purchase order at [email protected]
•faxing a purchase order to 502-899-2284

At the time of writing, the Orbit Reader is not yet available online, but isexpected to be available tomorrow.

This day has been a long time coming, with the first official announcementof the Orbit Reader 20 during the CSUN 2016 conference. For more informationabout the Orbit Reader 20, you can [read a review of the device in theJanuary issue of Access World.

The Braille Me has two methods of showing the cursor. I would have preferred8 dots myself but I get their reasoning for doing 6. If you just want toread braille like books, 6 dots is fine and $450 is a heck of a lot betterthan three thousand or so. My wife just wants a simple note taker to take todoctors, etc. and I just want to read NLS braille books from the library. Iused an 18-cell Braille lite for years and managed just fine. We can havetwo Braille me devices for less than a thousand.

We're waiting for the Braille Me. We heard the president of the
company on techtalk last Monday and we were very impressed. I highly

What it comes down to is personal preference.
I'm waiting to get my hands on the Orbit Reader 20 to see how it
compares to other displays.
I've used:
HIMS Braille Edge 40,
Baum's Vario Ultra 20 and 40,
Humanware's Braillliant BI,
Freedom Scientific's Focus 40 and 14; not to mention several of the
full braille note takers.

Of the above list, the HIMS BrailleEdge 40 was my favorite.  But, when
it died after 3 years and was going to cost close to $2,500 to repair
when a new one was just a little more, I decided to wait to see the
Orbit 20, which I have not seen yet.

I liked the Braille Edge because it is quiet, solidly built, easy to
switch from USB to Bluetooth, has basic note taking functionality
using an SD card and comes with a 2 year warrantee.

It is too bad there are not places where you can go and test all the
displays to see which one fits your needs the best, because there is
no one display that is right for everyone.

So the focus works well with ios 11? I thought it would be a fairly
bulky device what are your experiences for using it on the go? Does it
work well in combination with laptops or is it to deep so that you
have to reach too far back?

Dot quality is crisper, madeof more and steel no plastic, sd slot included for use as a futureability to read books and possibly write in stand-alone mode. It comeswith a nice case, can connect to five bluetooth devices, and I wouldrecommend it.
