Spotlight search is like the search box in Windows 7 when you press the Windows Key. You type in a search term and it searches your entire phone for the search string. You can specify in "Settings", "General", "Spotlight Search" which items to include, e.g. contacts, apps, music, audio books, podcasts etc. The search results appear in the order you specify in the settings, e.g. if you drag contacts into first place and followed by music and if you then searched for "Tim" your search results would show you first any contacts who have "Tim" in either their first or last name and then you would see all songs who either have "Tim" in the title orthe artist, e.g. "The Best of Times", Tim McCraw etc.
