Mike, if she has her heart set on an ipad, an ipad mini might be best. We
looked at the other sizes of ipads, and the ipad mini is such a good size
device. With digits she can use it very well for a stand alone phone, and the
ipad doesn't need to be near another device such as an iphone, Providing that
she would have the internet mobile service from t-mobile it would be very much
like a cell phone. If she didn't have the internet mobile service then it
would work like a skype phone meaning that you would have to be connected with
a wifi connection or connection through a hotspot. At that point digits is
about $10 to $25 at the most of which you would need to talk to t-mobile about
the details, of which this is much like other internet phone services. The
quality of the service is very good. Considering the difficulties with her
hands, if someone you all know has an ipad she could test out for a while to
see if she can take to it, that might be good for a period of time before she
goes through with getting an ipad. Also I'm considering with her coming from
her using the button phone. Not knowing all the details about her, the
coordination of her fingers on the touch screen with all of the swipes and so
on might be sort of difficult with the screen being so sensitive to the touch.
Possibly using a keyboard with the ipad that might be what she needs.

This person has never had a computer of any nature because of her hand
problems, & I'm trying to talk her into getting an iPhone over the iPad, but
for some reason she wants an iPad. Maybe now when I read her these messages
she'll change her mind. She uses a Revere cell phone that she would for phone
calls, but like all of you, I feel the iPhone would be her best option!
Phoning, texting, dictation, she would have it all, but I can't speak for her,
& I don't know just how limited her hand useage is. Thanks again for all your
input.

Correct, you can’t send regular SMS messages with an iPad unless you also
have an iPhone on the same WiFi network or you are using some sort of app. I
believe in the US google Voice would allow you to use your iPad much like a
phone.

Yes, if you have an iPhone and an iPad, there is a setting that will allow
you to receive calls on the iPad if the iPhone is in range.

You can also double tap on a contact phone number on the iPad and make a
call, again if the iPhone is in range.

But, without an iPhone, you would use FaceTime or Skype.

As for text messages, you can text using your email address to other Apple
device owners with an iPad, but I do not think you can text to a non-Apple
device. That one I'm not sure of, so take that with a grain of salt.

I say that because when I get a phone call my iPad will sometimes ring. But
yes, if you just have an iPad you will have to use Facetime to call.

    Hi Maria,

Thank you very much for your input. I'm going to assume that if she can
email with this iPad, she'll be able to send text messages with it as well. Am
I correct with this assumption? Thanks again.

Hi, the iPad does have dictation and email. I recommend she gets the iPad
Mini 4. I have the mini 2, but it doesn't have all the somewhat recent
hardware. I think she will need her phone with her to make phone calls.

    Subject: iPad Questions

    Hi All,

I have absolutely no knowledge about iPads, so here goes. A friend is
blind with hand dexterity problems, & was told by others not to get the large
iPad, but to get the midsize or small iPad. From doing a little research you
can get these iPads with WiFi or with WiFi & cellular. If we get her one with
WiFi & celular will she be able to make phone calls with the iPad? Do the mini
iPads have dictation for texting & emailing like the iPhones? When we buy her
this iPad does it matter who we buy it from, i.e, should we buy it from her
cell carrier, Apple or other wise...? All input will be gratefully accepted &
greatly appreciated. Thank y'all very much.
