In the accessible podcatching app that I use, RSS Radio, there are loads of
graphical equalizer settings, among which are Spoken Word and Vocal Booster
are the two best. (The others relate mainly to musical content. There are
also bass and treble boosters and reducers. The Bass Booster is nice fora
'big sound'.)

Does it work, say, in a crowded exhibit hall, where there's a lot of
background noise to contend with? (Does it then boost the voices of the
interviewer and interviewee to a higher level than the hubbub?)
(The podcatcher I use, RSSRadio, has 'audio compression', which equalises
lower-volume audio content to that of the person speaking.)

Hi,
Voice Boost is useful in a situation where a podcaster is speaking with
someone, and one person is louder than the other. It doesn't solve the
problem if the difference is immense, but I have listened to podcasts with
Voice Boost where the presenter apologizes for the volume disparity at the
end, and I hadn't noticed a problem. It works just fine regardless of how
the speed is set.
Best,
Anna

Voice Boost sounds like something that might be of interest to me. What
are its effects, or where would they be most noticeable? Does the playback
speed set faster, compromise it in any way?

Downcast was my primary podcast player for several years, and I tried
Overcast a little over a year ago and now use it as my primary podcast
player.
From what I remember, Downcast only had one feature that Overcast does
not, and that is the capability of actually saving your podcast files.
Now Overcast also has a couple of features that Downcast does not, and
that is the smart speed and voice boost features, which are both very good
features. I know this is only my opinion, but I think Overcast has the
best playback when it comes to playing faster then the normal speed.
Now I would encourage you, if you have not already, check out the settings
screen. 2 important settings there is whether you want to stream or
download the episodes, and what you want to do once you listen to an
episode. I personally download my episodes so I can listen to them no
matter whether I have an internet connection or not, and I choose to
manually delete an episode. That way if I want to keep it afterwards I
can. Now I will tell you that if I keep an episode after I listen to it,
it does still show up under unplayed episodes.
The smart speed and voice boost settings can be found on the playback
screen.
You will also find that Overcast is updated more frequently then downcast.
But at the end of the day, they are both good players, and it is a
personal preference of
which you choose to use.

Steve,
I'm not totally sold on Overcast, just thought I would give it another
shot. I do like the number of rodor actions available on each podcast
episode, more than the same old activate/delete that I saw in
Downcast. I have both and may still use Downcast until Overcast feels
more comfortable.

What made you switch? My only complaint with Downcast so far after using
it for a year or so is that I have a queue with nine stuck downloads I
cannot clear or access. Any thoughts on that one?

Greetings. After the recent flurry of messages praising Overcast, I
thought I would give the app another go. I have been using Downcast
for some time but am open to other options. I do like some of the
effects of Overcast. one thing that I noticed almost immediately in
Overcast, once I had imported my feeds and subscriptions from
Downcast, is that all of my podcasts appear as played. However, I have
not listened to all of them in Downcast, in fact many episodes in
certain podcasts were unplayed. When I looked in Overcast though it
said that there were no unplayed episodes. Does anyone know how I can
have Overcast display unplayed episodes, and keep them unplayed until
I actually listen to them?
Thanks,
Wayne
