Thanks for the article link. I don't think my problem is the same as that 
discussed in the article nor do I think it's bad earpods. I probably should 
have mentioned in my original post that the problem disappears when I take my 
iPhone 7 out of my pocket and continue the conversation using my earpods. For 
some reason, having the device in my pocket seems to be the problem causer.

Have you tried other wired headphones to make sure it's not an issue with that 
particular set of earpods?
Also, give this article on 9To5Mac from earlier today regarding the iPhone 7 
and iOS 11.3 involving failing microphones. Sounds like it may possibly be 
related to your issue.

While I haven't experienced the particular scenario you described, I have seen 
something similar when attempting to dictate a text while using the wired 
earpods. The results of the dictation are completely garbled and show no 
resemblance to what I actually said. I dictate on my iPhone quite often and 
with a very high degree of accuracy except in the scenario I just described.

Not sure what the common thread may be, but it's interesting to hear that 
others are experiencing the same type of behavior.
