You can download just the US maps, or just Canada or both. Both take about 4 GB of space on your device. It sounds like they are branching out into England and eventually will be available in many countries, but who knows how long that will take. In fact, it gives similar feedback to Blind Square The advantage Nearby explorer has is that it also does turn-by-turn directions, while Blind Square just tells you about streets you are coming to and will give you some information about directions and distance to your destination. Now, Blind Square in combination with Google Maps gives both. It really depends on the user which way is best. Nearby Explorer is quite customizable.
