I'm using an iPhone 4s and running IOS 6. It's working as described for me
too.

I never tried this before reading your post. But it works for me just as you
described. That is, playing music with the screen locked, then a double
press of the home button brings up the track name and artist along with a
pause button and at the bottom of the screen the unlock option.
