Here is some steps from WikiHow that helps to get started.
This is under VoiceOver Settings Braille.

Configuring Your Braille Display
1 Choose a display input/output. This will change which braille formatting is
used on your display.
You can choose between six-dot, eight-dot, or contracted braille.
2 Tap Status Cell . When enabled, VoiceOver will provide more information about
what is currently on the screen.
• You can opt to have the Status Cell display to the Left, Right, or Off.
• Status cells can be used to describe the formatting or style of text (e.g.
bold, italic, etc.).
3 Equations Use Nemeth Code . When enabled, the braille display will use a
linear format for mathematical equations on your braille display.
4 Show Onscreen Keyboard . When enabled, this displays a braille input on the
iPhone screen.
5 Turn Pages when Panning . This will automated turn pages while panning when a
line is too wide to display on the screen.
Panning is performed by pressing the left or right buttons of the display.
6 Tap Braille Translation . This let’s you choose which language is used when
translating braille with VoiceOver.
7 Tap Alert Display Duration . This will change how long an alert or
notification is shown on the braille display.
• Tap plus or minus to increase or decrease the duration.

Some times it matters which order you turn off the iPhone and braille display
as to whether they automatically connect again.
I think the order is turn the braille display on or off while the iPhone is
locked.
That may take some trial and error.
But, there should be no problem entering passwords or pin numbers once the
display connects.

HTH,
Richard

Subject: Using Braille on the iPhone;

One of my client's has received a Braille edge 40 to try out. We have
successfully pared the braille edge to the phone, now we need some pointers to
use the display. perhaps someone could send some instructions on how to setup
the device so my client can type in passwords, and write notes etc. in advance,
thanks for the help.
