Ann,
If buying from a store, it is necessary to verify the iPhone model to
know if it is compatible with your carrier. If it is, then you would
simply transfer the SIM card from your old phone to the new one. If
you are setting up new service, then you would ask your carrier to
mail you a SIM or go to their store where staff can do it for you.
