Thanks, Richard, this doesn’t sound so simple any more, apart from the fact that this shortcut texts somebody you specify and sends them your location it doesn’t really do much I can’t simply do by telling SIRI to open th ecamera and to start video recording myself.
OK, now I stopped writing for a while and actually tried this out. I downloaded the shortcut, gave it the appropriate permissions and put my wife’s number in as the contact. It does seem to work although there is still a fair bit of interaction required. Here is what I found: 1. Yes, if your phone is locked and you tell SIRI “Emergency Video” which is the phrase I recorded to launch the shortcut it simply tells you “You’ll need to unlock your iPhone first”. 2. When the iPhone is unlocked and I say “Emergency video”, it says it’s running the shortcut, it then takes quite a few seconds for the camera app to open, focus appears to be on “Record” so it does this properly and I can double tap to start recording. While it is doing this my wife already received a text message saying that I was being pulled over by police and it provided my longitude and latitude as well as the address, we were in our house and once it gave the address perfectly, the second time I twas off by one or two house numbers. 3. When I want to stop recording I do have to of course do this manually, then I have to tap “Use this video” and only then the video is sent and I am asked if I want to upload it to iCloud Drive or Dropbox. I tapped on Dropbox and gave permission for it to access Dropbox, but on the following screen I did not see any folders I have and it just had a button to “Upload here”. I tapped it and going to my Dropbox afterwards a file with a .mov extension had been uploaded. It was the first time I tried it, the second time I am not sure if I tapped on “Upload Here” or if I cancelled it, but the second file did not get uploaded and I thought it was silly that it kept asking me if I wanted to upload it again giving me the option of iCloud Drive and Dropbox. It would make more sense to me if you told it once and then this would be done automatically. In short, the app does seem to work, but it does require afair bit of user intervention. I assume in a normal incident of police interaction where you simply want a record of said interaction this should work find, but of course if you had in fact done something wrong or if the police officer felt he or she needed to escalate the situation you may never have the chance to stop recording the video and upload it although I guess maybe eventually somebody wold or the phone would run out of memory or battery and the video may then still be on your phone and could be used. I just actually went ot my All Photos album and all 3 videos I created by running the app were there even though only one had uploaded to Dropbox. It would appear that shortcuts in general only run when the phone is unlocked which makes calling shortcuts somewhat less useful. I created one to call my store’s main number and called it “Call the store”. As I said, if I tell SIRI to run it when the phone is locked it says it’s running it then it says “You’ll need to unlock your phone first” so I might as well just say “Call my work” which in fact uses my work number, SIRI knows who I am so saying “Call my work” does result in SIRI correctly calling my own work number and this works also when the phone is locked. I also selected a shortcut for recording a voice memo with the iPhone’s voice memo app. I called it “Record a voice memo”. If I run it it opens the voice memo app and puts focus on the record button, but I still have to double tap it to start recording. Conclusion: much better to use the app RecUp and to set it so it starts recording when the app is opened, this way I can say “Open RecUp” instead of “Record a Voice Memo” and RecUp opens and starts recording right away. I believe you can also set Just Press Record to record when the app is launched. Final overall conclusion: shortcuts are great, but at this point have quite a few limitations. I would like to see Apple to allow you to specify if a shortcut can run on the lockscreen or not so that some shortcuts could do this like one where you want to call somebody, take a picture or video, record a voice memo etc. After all, the camera app is available from the lock screen as well. Best regards, Sieghard You must first unlock your iPhone”. I assume you will of course have to unlock your phone if it is locked to run the shortcut, then you tell SIRI to run it and you have to tap to start recording. There is no app, but the shortcut is downloadable from the guy's Redit page who created it. I'll give the link to that page shortly. Once you download the app and add it to Siri, or just have it as one you can tap on, you will be asked who you want to receive a text message that says "I'm being pulled over," and who you want the video clip sent to, so you will need to give access to your contacts so you can select someone for these two steps. Then, when you run the shortcut for the first time, you will have to allow access to the microphone. There is a note that points out you will also have to manually start the recording, and then stop it and select to use or keep the video. Then, it will ask if you want to upload to iCloud etc. Here is the link: https://www.reddit.com/r/shortcuts/comments/9huqiw/getting_pulled_over_by_police/ That is all I know. Apparently this would stop any music or other audio playing, it would dim the iPhone screen and activate the camera to start recording the upcoming interaction with the police officer. I thought something like that could be a neat thing for a blind person to use as well in certain situations where you might want a video or even just an audio record of what was going on. I searched in the shortcuts app for “Police” and couldn’t find anything. How does one go about finding these shortcuts other than scrolling in the gallery or trying a search term? Are these also country specific like apps, e.g. some shortcuts might be available in the US but not in Canada and other countries?
