First, Apple no longer describes its retail locations as stores. Apple
just calls them Apple. The company has redefined itself as seling
experiences through technology rather than a tech hardware company.
the problem with the word store is that it suggests a shopping
experience. someone might visit Apple to buy a device. He might also
visit for a repair, ask a question, attend a class, participate in an
Apple user group, meet other Apple device users to discuss Apple
devices or services, or use the free Wifi.
As for the crowds, welcome to the world of 1.3 billion active Apple
ID's. Apple has not added locations at the same rate as the expanding
user base. Also, Apple locations here inn Chicago have become tourist
attractions. Many people visit Apple to see products in person or
people watch. They are not there to do anything specific. There is
always a group of folks who walk in a circle around the building for
10 or 15 minutes before leaving.
