Jed, You might want to try the Flicktype Keyboard. It is a subscription at $.99 a month but typing is fast and easy on it provided you know generally where the keys are located. It is designed to be used in portrait mode with one finger and you simply tap where you believe the keys you want to be located. After tapping those keys, you swipe right once and FlickType announces the word it thinks you want using its excellent predictive engine. You can single finger swipe through other choices if Flicktype's first guess was wrong. You then start typing the next word in the same fashion and flicktype inserts the needed spacing for you. You swipe right again at the end of the sentence and FlickType inserts a period. It does have a learning curve and takes some practice but it is well worth the effort.
