Indeed, if those types of things matter, Lyft's generally considered to be the more ethical of the two services. Around here (Southern California), Uber on average seems to be cheaper, but for the most part, I take Lyft when I need a ride. Often though, drivers work for both companies. So it's really a tomato/tommato type of deal.
