I'm not sure about making it happen automatically, as it is supposed to do it while locked, plugged in, connect to Wi-Fi, which I always assumed it happened over night. You can go into your settings, double tap on your name at the top, double tap on iCloud and go to iCloud Backup and manually tell it to backup now.
