Automatic backup was still turned on. I called Apple support & they had me do a manual backup. We'll see if that somehow makes the automatic backups start working again next time I recharge.
If not, one thing I did not try was turning automatic backups off, shutting off the phone then turning automatic backups back on when I turn the phone back on. This seems to have worked for a number of settings I needed to redo once I upgraded IOS; not sure why I didn't think of trying it for this problem.
