I believe you would be safer to keep auto brightness off. It doesn’t take that much time to change the brightness for someone sighted. The quickest, simplest way to change brightneess is, indeed, with SIRI. You may also want to know that setting brightness to zero saves battery power, while having brightness raised to 50% or 75% and turning on your screen curtain does not save battery. The screen curtain is a voice over feature whose purpose, I think, is to provide privacy for the VO user who will not know if someone is looking over her shoulder when using her phone in a public place.
