Hi Sandy, Well, the tones happen when it gets all the edges and if you get a solid tone for a few seconds, it should auto capture if that is on. But, you need all four edges for that to work. He put auto capture beta on the release because there were people who couldn't get it to work, which I suspect personally was user error, but he also marked it as beta because he hopes to improve that mode.
You need the camera about 11 or so inches above the document, to be level, and hopefully with the flash on, it shouldn't matter what the room lighting is like. I've always been blessed with an ability to hold a phone level and still so do not have too much problem getting good scans free hand, but I work with lots of people who tilt the phone and can't quite get an ideal scan. Which voice are you using? Mine starts reading pretty quickly and I use Amy from Ivona in Voice Dream Reader, so that is what I get with the Scanner. I hope that helps a little.
