Well! It's on. Goodness knows what I did.
The home page looks normal with all the usual headings on it. The only thing
different when it came
back on was that Karen: yes voice-over is back too said tha Google wanted to
get my permission for
it to access my location: allow/don't allow. Which should I have done.
I wish I knew what had happened and how I had corrected it.
I told my New Zealand Iphone users list that the first show of anything about
to happen was that,
when I replugged it into the wall after finding that Mich's suggestion of
plugging it into the USB
port on the computer resulted in the computer being, temporarily, disabled but
did zilch for the
phone: was that the phone made a few little sounds that sounded as though a
teeny weeny fairy
blacksmith was striking an anvil and then I flicked and flicked my fingers
across the bottom half of
the screen and started to hear one or two part syllables and then, after a bit,
Karen started to
speak.

Subject: S O S in a big way

My iPhone 5s was going fine two nights ago which is the only time when I use
it, but last night,
when I switched it on, I found that everything, and I do mean *everything had
turned to custard and
a very nasty custard at that!
I hope that I can explain what is happening, or, to be precise, what is * not
happening.
I will start by saying that for the past couple of weeks, at random times, it
has been asking me for
my password, but when I do a single finger double tap on "not now" it goes on
with whatever I had
it doing. I have no security settings on the phone as there is no sensitive
information like bank
account numbers etc stored in it, so I was * surprised when I switched it on
last night, and it
asked: no! I will rephrase that: it demanded that I enter my Apple id,
password and email address.
Reluctantly, I attempted to do all that which was demanded , but it wouldn't
accept anything.
There is no voice: I have pressed the up volume button until my finger has a
blister on it and I
have checked the mute button, but voice-over is not there, and in fact, with
the exception of the
book that I am reading over which I have very little control, nothing is
working. I can't even
switch it off. I thought that I had, eventually, done that by holding the
power and home buttons
down for several seconds at the same time, but when I release them, I get, not
the normal screen
locking click but a, slightly drawn out one as though I had taken a photo.
When I checked the
phone this morning, it was very hot, so, obviously, I had not succeeded in
switching it off.
I haven't the smallest notion of just what has gone wrong. Does my explanation
give any clue as to
what I can do to fix whatever has gone haywire.
I have not, recently, done an update and think, though won't bet the ranch on
it, that the latest
IOS update was 11. and a small handful of decimal placings.
I have just checked it and nothing has improved except that it is not as hot as
it was, but none of
us are after a time when we have turned our toes up/kicked the bucket and the
multitude of other
euphamisms for crossing the rainbow bridge.
