Hi, I have a friend who uses assistive touch because she is struggling with the swipe up to go home or to close an app. She also got her screen curtain on and couldn't get it off. I called to see if there was a gesture I could put in assistive touch so she could just tap on it to raise the curtain. She just couldn't do the 3 finger triple tap, though this morning she did it finally because she left it alone and she was relaxed this morning. Sometimes just better to put things down when frustration is high and try later.
Anyway, the Apple accessibility guy told me it was better if she tried to learn VO gestures as assistive touch is not made to work with VO. She couldn't put in a gesture because the sighted person taps on a little circle to make the custom gesture work. He said the menu goes all over the screen and sighted folks using it just drag it out of the way of what they are doing. There is no gesture connecting it with VO. I would say if there are a lot of blind people wanting to use this feature to its fullest that they write to Accessibility so Apple can make VO work with it properly. Though I have not seen her have problems going home with the assistive touch, he also told me that often the gestures we use with VO will not work quite correctly causing unnecessary re-doing to get where you want to be. Yes, our gestures are, or can be, difficult, (took me almost 2 months to do that blippy thing from the bottom of the screen, but persistence and practice pay dividends. For me now face ID and the blippy thing work most of the time. When they don't, one more try seems to do it. Have no idea why Apple didn't think blind people could have problems with their hands, but this is what I was told.
