Hello Les, I can only speak from the perspective of being on the listening end of an iPhone 5 connection as I do not own one.
I have experienced superior call quality when the iPhone 5 caller is or is not using the iPhone 5 speaker phone. By the way, I noticed a vast improvement when iPhone 5 caller uses the new Ear Pods, as well. This weekend, I went to the Apple store and purchased a pair for my iPhone 4 S. Those with whom I have spoken, via my new Ear Pods report a definite increase in both call volume and quality as a result.
