Hi Tom and Becky,
I wouldn't worry about it, the batteries in today's smartphones are pretty smart and don't develop a memory like they used to do 15 or more years ago. A battery's life is determined by charge cycles, but if you only discharge your battery down to 50% and charge it back up then you would have to do this twice before it counts 1 charge cycle. The fact is that most of us upgrade to the next phone before the battery gets so bad that you would have to replace it and for those who do tend to keep their iPhones 4 or more years it really is not such a big deal to get the battery replaced after 2 or 3 years and in my opinion it is well worth it should you plan to keep your phone as long as possible.
