Janet, are you sure it’s a text message and not an iMessage you received? In iMessages you can insert line breaks either pressing the enter key or return on the on screen keyboard no problem.

If you hit the enter key, of course it sends the message. So, my guess is that someone simply copied the text of the pattern and pasted it in the text message. In my experience, iPhones can handle long text messages, where other phones split them into multiple messages. You can in an iMessage and of course I could be wrong regarding text messages. Considering that you only have 160 characters (about 30 to 35 words) I find it rarely necessary anyways. If you type a text message longer than that it gets broken into several messages of 160 characters on the recipients phone.
