While I have always gotten an audible signal when a voicemail is left it never displays and even when I've asked Siri if I had a new voicemail she will say no I have no new voicemail messages. However, when I phone voicemail there it is waiting. I'd meant to ask about this but it isn't a major problem (yet) so it slipped my mind.
