About two-step verification and SMS Learn how SMS works with two-step verification for your Apple ID. When you set up two-step verification for your Apple ID, you must provide at least one SMS-capable phone number to receive temporary verification codes from Apple. You'll use these codes to verify your identity and help keep your account secure. The text messages that provide verification codes are free of charge. If you're not connected to your carrier's network when you receive the message, your carrier may charge you for roaming. Add or remove an SMS number 1. Sign in to your Apple ID account page, located at: https://appleid.apple.com/account/home. 2. In the Security section, click Edit. 3. Click Add a Trusted Phone number. 4. To add a number, enter the phone number and verify it with a text. 5. To remove a number, click next to the phone number you want to remove. I can have the verification code sent to any of them at any time. This eliminates the need to cary multiple Apple devices at all times. I’m not suggesting that 2-factor authentication is perfect but I am arguing that it is a necessary evil in a world were thieves live and breathe to rob us of our identity.
