Mark,

In your one message you write about 2-factor authentication and in your message
to Reggie you write about 2-step verification. You do know these are two
different animals? They may both belong to the Apple species, but 2-step
verification is an older method which works on older devices and which Apple
does not recommend for newer devices which run I think iOS 10 or later.
I am also not understanding why there is so much complaining about increased
security. I have 2-factor authentication turned on for most services and
websites I use and where it is offered, e.g. my Microsoft accounts, Google,
Dropbox etc. For services which can use an authenticator app I use Microsoft
Authenticator, Google and Apple do sort of their own thing and Roboform, my
password manager, still uses email or text messages to send the code. One
should also note that with Apple you really only have to use 2-factor
authentication on a device or a web browser once, during that initial
verification you can specify that this is a trusted device or browser and
that's that for the future. I think often it's just a matter where people
should spend a bit of time reading up on how exactly it works in order to
understand this better.

Best regards,
Sieghard

Hello Regina,

About two-step verification and SMS - Apple Support

About two-step verification and SMS

Learn how SMS works with two-step verification for your Apple ID.

When you set up two-step verification for your Apple ID, you must provide at
least one SMS-capable phone number to receive temporary verification codes from
Apple. You'll use these codes to verify your identity and help keep your
account secure.

The text messages that provide verification codes are free of charge. If you're
not connected to your carrier's network when you receive the message, your
carrier may charge you for roaming.

Add or remove an SMS number

1.
Sign in to your Apple ID account page, located at:
https://appleid.apple.com/account/home.

2.
In the Security section, click Edit.

3.
Click Add a Trusted Phone number.

4.
To add a number, enter the phone number and verify it with a text.

5.
To remove a number, click next to the phone number you want to remove.

Hi, where can you access your two-factor verification in settings. I want to
add to my numbers, thank you Mark. I have forgotten how I accessed this. Thanks
so much.

Hello Chris,

Your comments don’t make sense to me.

First, in order to setup 2-factor authentication, you must also add at least 1
rescue SMS phone number contact to your profile.

Second, when you are required to verify your account, in the same prompt, the
dialog box includes a link that says something like, didn’t get code? If you
click on that link, then the code is sent to your SMS number. Once this is
done, you need only open the text message and, more often than not, the code
will be automatically entered into the required field, for you.

By the way, you can have as many rescue SMS numbers associated with your
2-factor authentication profile, as you like.

In my case, for example, i have 3 telephone numbers in my profile. I can have
the verification code sent to any of them at any time. This eliminates the
need to cary multiple Apple devices at all times.

I’m not suggesting that 2-factor authentication is perfect but I am arguing
that it is a necessary evil in a world were thieves live and breathe to rob us
of our identity. Also, I prefer 2-factor on Apple to that of Google’s system,
by far-and-away.
