I think the iPhone 8 will get at least 2 and probably 3 more updates. It came out in 2017 with iOS 11, last year it got iOS 12 and this year it is iOS 13. I think it will get iOS 14 next year and iOS 15 in 2020 and most likely it will get iOS 16 in 2021. Think of the iPhone 5S, it came out in 2013 with iOS 7, in 2014 it got iOS 8, in 2015 it was iOS 9, iOS 10 in 2016, iOS 11 in 2017 and iOS 12 last year. It won’t get iOS 13 any more, but that is a total of 6 versions including the one it shipped with and 5 upgrades. The iPhone 8 shipped with iOS 11 which means it only had 2 upgrades now so if it also gets 5 upgrades it would be 3 more all the way to iOS 16 in 2022 and only in the fall of 2023 it would not get iOS 17. Of course it could be one less which means it would not get iOS 16 in 2022 any more, but that still means 3 years of life with full support (of course less any features which are only supported by newer hardware such as 5G support in a few years.) I guess the iPhone 6 did get one upgrade less since it came out a year after the 5S and iOS 12 was also it’s last version, but one also needs to factor in that as the hardware and the OS mature, upgrades may not offer such drastic new features. Combine this with the desire of many users and companies to produce less garbage and use devices longer and it is not impossible that what are essentially relatively new devices now could be supported for an extra year..
