Do you need (or would have great benefit) from portability? If so, the iMac shouldn't be under consideration. Lovely machine, but at the far end from portable. But I agree with the suggestion to hit up the local Apple store. Don't neglect asking about older/refurbished models ... often not on display, but Apple usually has a large number available ... the folks in store might be able to help you try out the nearest current model.
Aside from the obvious (processor, memory, disk/ssd) the biggest usability differences are the keyboards (older tends to be better ;<) and available ports (newest models are all USB C ... which means dongles to use most external devices) ...
