I also am experiencing the situation where after reading a message, and pressing the Back button, focus will be random and sometimes jump to the top of the list, very unsettling. I have started using Outlook for IOS, which is free, and will connect very nicely to most email services. No focus problems in this app, very Voiceover friendly.
